When we think of national security, military or border patrols often come to mind. But every day, Air Traffic Controllers (ATCOs) quietly protect Zimbabwe’s skies from potential threats, intentional or accidental.

🛰️ The Watchful Eye in the Sky

From their strategic vantage points in control towers and radar rooms, ATCOs:

  • Track unidentified or unauthorized aircraft

  • Coordinate with national defense and CAAZ security authorities

  • Ensure secure airspace during VIP movements or special operations

  • Respond to emergencies including hijackings or no-radio aircraft

These duties aren’t just operational, they’re strategic.

Through close collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ), ATCOs help implement ICAO’s Global Aviation Security Plan (GASeP). Zimbabwe’s radar systems, communication protocols, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) are designed to prevent threats before they escalate.

🛡️ Emergency Response and Preparedness

ATCAZ promotes the training of its members in national emergency scenarios, ranging from runway incursions to communication failures. During incidents, it’s ATCOs who must remain calm, coordinate response, and protect both life and airspace integrity.

At ATCAZ, we train not only for operations but for contingencies. Because when every second counts, expertise makes all the difference.
